It is sometimes difficult to imagine that the James Bond film series has been going on for 50 years this year. Luckily for fans of the hugely popular film series the 23rd James Bond film, which is called Skyfall, coincides with half a century of 007 on the big screen after an enforced four year break thanks to the financial problems and eventual bankruptcy of Metro Goldwyn Mayer studios.

Each different actor to don James Bond’s Walther PPK and utter the words “Bond… James Bond” has had a different take on the character to a greater or lesser degree. Sean Connery was the prototype of course and George Lazenby was pretty much a similar style of Bond although perhaps more physical due to his commando training.

Roger Moore became the third actor to play James Bond and so far is the longest running actor in the part. He played 007 for laughs and was enormously popular at the time, although most Bond fans think of the “comedy Bond” films as a low point of the series.

Timothy Dalton tried to go back to the books, but although his character was much more serious, many of the gadgets remained in the Moore era. And Pierce Brosnan, although a popular Bond, was in some respects a “Roger Moore lite” although the comedy was not so pronounced. It also saw the James Bond films turn from espionage thrillers into more clear cut action films.

The latest incumbent in the role in Daniel Craig. His take is much more serious with little humour and the action is still there, although it has become more violent and more realistic.

Fans of 007 await with bated breath the arrival of Skyfall on the big screen in October.
